BIO

Ernie Johannson is BMO’s Group Head of U.S. Personal and Business Banking and a member of the bank’s Executive Committee. Ernie leads a U.S. team responsible for serving more than 2 million personal and business banking customers, as well as BMO’s North American Retail Payments and North American Fraud teams.

Ernie most recently served as Head of North American Retail Credit and Chief Risk Officer for Canadian Personal & Commercial (P&C) Banking and Wealth Management. In that role, she optimized the bank’s retail risk profile and performance while accelerating adoption of technology and advanced analytics to enhance customer experience.

Prior to that role, Ernie was Head of North American Retail Payments and Personal Banking for Canadian P&C. During her tenure, she drove the growth of the Canadian retail and North American payments businesses, and championed the customer experience strategy for retail and microbusiness customers. She was responsible for customer strategies, product management, pricing and credit management optimization, sales force effectiveness, customer and product analytics and insights, as well as direct management of the mobile mortgage and lending sales force. In addition, she led the integration and optimization of technologies, processes, marketing and channel strategies for the personal business.

Before joining BMO, Ernie was EVP of Customer Strategy and Integration at Fidelity Investments, and held successively senior positions at CIBC, including SVP of Marketing and Strategy for retail markets, and SVP of Credit Cards.

Ernie serves on the Boards of Directors for Payments Canada and Moneris Solutions Corporation. She is past Chair of the Canadian Marketing Association and received its Honorary Life Membership Award for her contributions developing the marketing industry. American Banker magazine ranked Ernie second on its 2018 “Women to Watch” list.
